Today on the Blog tour I'll be interviewing Cheryl Renee Herbsman, author of the debut novel, BREATHING.

About Breathing

What if the guy who took your breath away was the only one who could help you breathe?

Savannah would be happy to spend the summer in her coastal Carolina town lying in a hammock reading her beloved romance novels and working at the library. But then she meets Jackson. Once they lock eyes, she’s convinced he’s the one—her true love, her soul mate, a boy different from all the rest. And at first it looks like Savannah is right. Jackson abides by her mama’s strict rules, and stays by her side during a hospitalization for severe asthma, which Savannah becomes convinced is only improving because Jackson is there. But when he’s called away to help his family—and seems uncertain about returning—Savannah has to learn to breathe on her own, both literally and figuratively.

This debut novel has it all—an endearing, funny, hopelessly romantic main character, lots of down-home Southern charm, and a sunny, salty beach setting that will transport you to the Carolina coast.

About Chery Renee Herbsman

Cheryl Renée Herbsman lives in Northern California with her husband and two children, but she grew up in North Carolina and often spent summer vacations at the Carolina coast. Like Savannah, she fell in love as a teenager, and like Savannah and Jackson, she and her boyfriend carried on a long-distance relationship. They are now celebrating their twentieth wedding anniversary.

Welcome, Cheryl! Thanks for stopping by to chat. First question: What competes for your time and how do you manage to give writing the appropriate amount of time it requires?

Cheryl: When I'm not writing, I'm usually spending time with my kids and my husband. But I usually write when they're at school and work. I try to block out most of that time for writing, but sometimes I really do have to get to the store or walk the dog or work on the marketing side of bookselling. I rarely let things like cleaning or laundry intervene. But email and internet stuff ends up snipping away at my time.

Me: It's hard to resist the internet! What is your writing routine? Do you outline or write as you go? Do you fully sketch and develop your main character initially, or get to know him/her as you write?

Cheryl: I usually just start with a character and a setting and see what happens. I will do some character sketching along the way. But I have never done an outline. I usually don't know what's going to happen until it does.

Me: What do you particularly love about the setting you portray in your book?

Cheryl:I love the beaches on the Carolina coast -- so beautiful and warm. The sand is soft, the beach wide. My family always went there during summer vacations. I recently went for a week with my husband and kids all the way from California. It was so worth it. We had an amazing time.

Me: What actor or actress do you imagine playing your main character in a movie or T.V. version of your book?

Cheryl: Dakota Fanning!

Me: She's a popular choice. Thanks for stopping by. I'm so excited to read BREATHING - the cover, the setting and even the storyline seem somewhat reminiscent of one of my favortie authors, Sarah Dessen so I just know I'll love it!
